Description
The Garden Pavilion at the southwest corner of Abbotswood lower terrace, along with the gates, gate piers, and walls framing the rose garden and lower terrace, was built around 1902 and is likely designed by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. The garden walls are constructed of drystone rubble and stand about 3 feet high on the garden sides, with taller buttresses acting as retaining walls outside the garden. The layout features two rectangular areas, with the lower section containing an octagonal stone pavilion at the northeast corner. This pavilion has a hipped stone roof and is supported by three rubble piers with open sides. The different levels of the garden are enhanced by box hedging and small pools, representing a well-preserved example of Edwardian garden design. The lower terrace includes a central gateway flanked by ball finial piers and wrought iron gates.
