Description

The Pineapple Spa and associated cottages (Nos 1, 2 & 3 Spa Cottages) date from circa 1807 and were originally a spa, later converted into cottages. The construction is of coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, with the former spa pump room in ashlar. The roofs are Cotswold stone with coped verges and ashlar chimneys. Cottage No. 3 steps down the hillside. The main portion, comprising Nos 1 and 2, features a central Hindu (Sezincote) style ashlar design with panelled pilasters and an enriched parapet. It has two dormers with concave gables and finials, along with a sash window with glazing bars. The ground floor has two diamond-pane windows within an ogee-headed double surround capped by anthemion finials. A central doorway has panelled pilasters, a concave-sided panel above, and a significant stone segmental hood topped by a pineapple finial, leading to a half-glazed door with diamond glazing. The flanking cottages (Nos 1 and 2) are two storeys high and feature raised surrounds to their openings. They include central paired windows with lobed heads and diamond lattice casements, and outer ledged doors. No. 1 has a two-light stone mullioned attic window in the gable. No. 3 is plainer, being two storeys high with three windows. It has two-light leaded casements with raised surrounds, and a central doorway above which is a keyed bullseye inscribed "Carbonated Chalbyate Discovered 1807". The rear of the Spa Cottage (Pineapple Spa) incorporates reverse quadrant walls forming a later scullery; within is a vaulted cellar situated over the spring. The main room features a tall arch with rusticated outer jambs, suggesting a previous open entry. Group value is significant reflecting the architectural interest and historical association with spa culture.
