Description
The lodge, gates, gatepiers, and entrance quadrants to Abbotswood were built in 1869 by Haywood, with the gates and other features added around 1902 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Mark Fenwick. The lodge is constructed from rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with Cotswold stone roofs that have coped verges. It is designed in a gabled L-plan in the Cotswold style and has one and a half storeys. The windows are mullion style with drips above them. There is a gabled porch featuring a pointed doorway, and an angled bay with a hipped roof on the south gable. A rainwater head is dated 1869. The ashlar gate piers have a moulded base and capping, topped with pineapple variant finials. The gates are made of excellent cast and wrought iron, featuring panelled rails, uprights, and decorative scroll work above. The flanking quadrant walls are made of snecked rubble and stand about 8 feet high.
