Description
Manor House is a building from the early to mid-17th century that underwent alterations in the late 17th century and again in the mid to late 19th century, with modern updates. It is constructed of rubble with a Cotswold stone roof and features coped verges. The house has three groups of chimneys, with large square shafts in groups of two and three.
The entrance front is two storeys high and has five bays, featuring mullion windows with two and four lights, and a six-light window with a king mullion and transoms in the left-hand bay. Above, there is a central gable in the attic with a three-light mullion window. Below this, a projecting two-storey porch made of ashlar stone has a gable and ball-finials, with a string course over the first floor that returns as a drip to the window on the left. The porch is supported by Tuscan columns on panelled bases and features a segmental pediment that is broken for a strapwork cartouche with a blind shield. The spandrels of the arched doorway also have strapwork, and the inner door is Tudor arched.
At the rear, the building is irregular, with two storeys and attics, and three storeys in some parts. It has three hipped dormers and mullion and transom windows. There is a large extension from the 19th century to the left, which is two storeys high and has three bays, originally designed for farm implements but now used as a sun-room.
Inside, there is a vaulted cellar. The hall features a moulded stone doorway with urn stops. The staircase, dating from the mid-17th century, has large turned balusters that have been reset. The west room on the first floor boasts a magnificent early to mid-17th century fireplace with an imbricated hood supported by enriched brackets carried by herm shafts with strapwork. The enriched cornice includes affronted sphinxes, and the panelled plaster ceiling is decorated with grapes in garlands, fleur de lys, and flat bosses in panels.
