Description

Numbers 45 and 46 and the village school are two cottages and a school building located in Great Barrington, dated 1874 as indicated on a shield on the left gable end. The cottages are of a similar date. They are constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone, with stone slate roofing and ashlar stacks. The school has a 'T'-shaped plan, with the cottages flanking the main entrance, creating a generally rectangular layout.

The entrance front is symmetrical and two stories high, featuring a 2:3:2 window arrangement. There are four original metal casement windows with leaded panes, although most windows have been replaced with wooden casements, some of which retain leaded panes or have horizontal glazing bars. All windows are set within flat-chamfered surrounds and have stopped hoods. The central doorway, which is part-glazed, is framed by a flat-chamfered surround and has a flat hood supported by moulded stone brackets. Above the doorway is a blind window. There are C19 plank doors on the right and left sides, each with single panes. Flat canopies supported by moulded corbels cover each door. The roof is hipped and features two axial stacks.

At the rear, the school building is single-story and has five large 3-light wooden casement windows with transoms and stopped hoods, as well as similar windows in the gable ends. The building has axial and gable-end stacks, with cappings and skirtings on both parts. The interior was not inspected and the property was empty at the time of the resurvey in June 1986.
