Description
Number 44 is a detached house located in Great Barrington village, dating from the mid-17th century, with extensions or rebuilding from the late 17th century. The right-hand bay is from the mid-17th century and features coursed thinly-bedded limestone mixed with deeply bedded squared and dressed limestone. The late 17th-century bays on the left are constructed with large blocks of coursed squared and dressed limestone. The house has a stone slate roof with ashlar stacks and a rectangular plan, presenting a gable end to the road and an extension with a catslide roof at the rear.
It is two storeys high with an attic, illuminated by two 2-light roof dormers with leaded panes. The facade has three windows; the left-hand bay contains two 2-light flat-chamfered stone-mullioned casements, while the right-hand bay has two hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casements. Above the door, there is a single-light window with a double-chamfered surround. All windows are topped with stopped hoods. The front door, located off-centre to the left, is a 19th-century plank door with a large dressed stone lintel. There is a blocked 2-light stone-mullioned casement with a stopped hood on the first floor of the gable end facing the road. The gable-end stacks have cappings and skirtings.
The interior has not been inspected. At the rear, a coursed squared and dressed limestone wall approximately 3 meters high forms a small rectangular enclosure. This enclosure contains a 19th-century plank door set within a flat-chamfered Tudor-arched surround, inscribed with 'BERKS / VAGRANT CELLS / GLOSSHIRE', and a shuttered opening to the right of the doorway. This enclosure likely served as a form of lock-up. The property is part of the Barrington Park Estate, and it is noted that part of the parish of Great Barrington was a detached part of Berkshire until 1844.
