Description
A school, and former school house, dated 1864. The building is constructed of rough ashlar walls with ashlar dressings, and has slate roofs with coped gables and irregularly placed ashlar stacks along the ridge. Part of the building is one storey high, part is one storey and has a loft, and part is two storeys high. Number 38, the former school house, is located at the left end and features a projecting gabled wing to the left and a gabled porch at the angle between this wing and the main range. The porch has a ledged door set within a shouldered arched opening, above which is a curved-sided, cusped triangular window. On the ground floor of the wing is a three-light stone mullioned window with arched lights and cast iron glazing; a similar two-light window sits on the first floor, and a single light window is found in the gable. To the right of the porch is a matching two-light window on the ground floor. A gabled dormer with a similar window projects from the attic. The school section has projecting gabled wings at each end, each with a porch mirroring that of Number 38. A gabled dormer with a date plaque is centrally located on the central section, below which is a three-light stone mullioned and transomed window, with the centre light raised and featuring arched lights and cast iron glazing, flanked by buttresses. The left gable has a central buttress terminating in an octagonal shaft with a moulded cornice, rising above the gabled apex. It contains two three-light stone mullioned and transomed windows with arched lights and cast iron glazing. The right gable features a five-light stone mullioned and transomed window with arched lights and cast iron glazing, with a single light window above in the gable. This is a good and largely unspoiled example of a Victorian village school.
