Description
The Martyn's House is a detached house located on the north side of The Square in Puddletown. It primarily dates from the 18th century but may have origins that are much older. The left section of the house is a later addition and was formerly the Post Office. The building features plastered walls and a thatched roof, with plastered end stacks and one stack located left of center. It has an L-shaped plan and is two storeys high. The front displays vertical pilasters, and there is a six-panel raised panel door beneath a flat moulded hood supported by shaped brackets. Both the ground and first floors have two tripartite sash windows with glazing bars. In the left section, there is one sash window with glazing bars on the ground floor. The rear wing is constructed in a similar style. Inside, the ground floor room at the right end has an 18th-century fireplace surround. The rear wing features some chamfered ceiling beams and lead-light windows, one of which contains early glass. There are also several 18th-century panelled doors. The roof of the main range appears to be of cruck construction, with possible signs of smoke-blackening.
