Description

The Old School and Former School comprises two cottages and a former school building, dating primarily to the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the mid-to-late 19th century and a small addition dating to the late 18th or 19th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone, with a string course. The right end wall of the schoolroom is partially rebuilt in 19th-century brick. The roofs are corrugated iron, with brick ridge and end stacks. A later addition is of red brick in Flemish bond with an old tile roof and a brick end stack.

The cottages, numbered 1 and 2, have a two-unit and one-unit plan respectively. Number 1 is two storeys and attic, with a three-window front. Number 2 is similar. Plank doors are found throughout. Number 1 has a mid-to-late 19th-century slate hood with chamfered woodwork and fretted bargeboards; Number 2 has a simpler gabled hood. Most windows are older, two-light leaded casements, some centre-hung. Number 1 has 19th-century one-, three- and two-light casements with a horizontal glazing bar on the ground floor. The former schoolroom is single-storey and four-windowed, with an entrance on the right, incorporating two small 19th-century two-light casements. Attic casements, also two-light, are present in the return sides of Nos. 1 and 2. The rear of the building has a three-window range; the ground floor features single-light windows, and the former school has a plank door and a 19th-century three-light casement.

Internally, Number 1 has boxed ceiling beams and six-panelled doors. Number 2 is noted for its ceiling beams and plank doors.
