Description

Bishops Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dated 1726, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and features a tile roof with brick ridge stacks. The building has an L-plan that extends to an F-plan, with wings at the rear. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a four-window range. The second bay contains a mid/late 19th-century half-glazed six-panelled door, which is sheltered by a mid/late 19th-century chamfered painted wood open porch in a simple Gothic style. Throughout the building, there are 2-light 19th-century casement windows, with large ground floor windows featuring horizontal glazing bars. The first floor windows and dormers also have glazing bars, and contrasting sandstone lintels with keystones are present. There are four 2-light roof dormers, and the left return side has a three-window range, a 19th-century half-glazed four-panelled door, and another Gothic porch. The right return side displays the date and initials EH and RI scratched into a corner stone, along with a plank door and 2-light casements. At the rear, the centre has a half-glazed six-panelled door, a 18th-century leaded three-light casement, and a similar 2-light casement beyond the left wing. The first floor has 2-light casements with glazing bars and two leaded 2-light roof dormers, while the wings contain 19th and 20th-century casements.

Inside, the hall features a floor made of diagonally-set flags and small quarry tiles, along with a 19th-century staircase. The room to the left has a run-out chamfered ceiling beam, while the room to the right includes an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, a smoke cupboard with an open fret door, and the remains of a bread oven. The floors are flagged from the 18th century, and there are 19th-century panelled doors and shutters. The first-floor room has cross beams and divided stairs leading to the attics, which feature old wide floorboards and two-panelled plank doors with H-L hinges. Some stud partitions are present, and the roof has trenched purlins.
