Description

Church Cottage is a cottage dating from the early to mid 17th century. It has been partially rebuilt and substantially extended to the rear in the late 20th century. The structure is timber framed with whitewashed brick infill, and the later additions are also of whitewashed brick. The roof, added in the late 20th century, is tiled, and there is a brick ridge stack. Originally, the cottage had a two-unit plan and is now one storey with an attic, featuring two ground floor windows. The entrance is located on the left return side, and there are small leaded two-light windows. The left return side has jowled posts, and the wall is underbuilt in whitewashed brick with a rendered gable. The sides and rear have late 20th-century leaded casements, and an irregular late 20th-century wing includes a part-glazed plank door. The right return side features a jowled post on the left. Some timbers have been replaced, and there are French windows.

Inside, the room to the left has an ogee stop-chamfered ceiling beam, and there is an open fireplace with an ogee stop-chamfered bressumer and a bread oven, which is back-to-back with another open fireplace that has a cambered bressumer in the room to the right. There is a heavy ceiling beam, and the first floor retains some exposed timber framing and old purlins. The cottage is included for its group value.
