Description

No. 48 in Great Barrington Village is a house that was originally two separate houses, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks. The building has a rectangular plan, featuring two storeys and an attic, which is illuminated by a single two-light roof dormer at the rear.

To the left gable end, there is a single-storey store, while a two-storey extension is located at the right gable end. The main body of the house has a four-windowed garden front, with two-light 20th-century wooden casements and wooden lintels on both the ground and first floors. A 20th-century part-glazed door is situated under an open-sided lean-to on the left, supported by a flat canopy with moulded stone brackets. To the right, a two-light casement has been inserted into a former doorway, which also features a similar canopy. The gable ends are finished with flat coping and gable-end stacks.

An alleyway runs through the single-storey store at the right gable end. The left side of the building was formerly a separate two-storey, three-windowed cottage, which had a central doorway with a flat canopy supported by moulded brackets; this doorway is now partially blocked with a window. The roadside front of the main body includes a single 12-pane sash window and a 20th-century part-glazed door with leaded panes at the top. The former separate cottage at the right gable end is lit by one two-light and one three-light stone-mullioned casement, both with stopped hoods, and there are plank doors leading to the alleyways on both gable ends. The interior has not been inspected.
