Description

Number 2 is a pair of semi-detached villas located on Montpellier Grove, built around 1830-1840. The building features stucco over brick with an ashlar porch and a concealed roof, along with iron area railings.

The exterior is two stories tall with six first-floor windows. Notable stucco detailing includes a first-floor band with full-height Doric pilasters at the ends and around the center and outer windows, topped by a continuous frieze and cornice. The ground floor has horizontal rustication, and all windows are 6/6 sashes, taller on the ground floor, set in plain reveals with sills. The basement contains both 6/6 and 8/8 sashes.

Entrances are located in porches on the return elevations. The right entrance has a flight of roll-edged steps leading to a four-panel door with a fanlight featuring radial glazing bars. The left entrance has three steps leading to another four-panel door in a projecting porch, which includes a lattice frieze, a fanlight with radial glazing bars, and a tooled arch with a keystone in a pilastered surround with an entablature. The left return features three irregularly spaced first-floor windows, full-height pilasters at the ends, a 6/6 sash over the porch, a 3/3 sash to the left, and a round-arched staircase window, with blind openings on the right.

Inside, the villa retains original joinery and plasterwork, including panelled shutters, panelled doors, moulded cornices, and fireplaces. The area railings display a scrolled lozenge motif, and the wall to the right has a round-arched opening and copings, abutting Nos 3 and 4 Montpellier Grove.
