Description
Three houses, likely dating to around 1840, are located on Suffolk Road, Cheltenham, and have undergone later additions and alterations. The construction is stucco over brick, with artificial slate roofs and decorative iron brackets.
The houses are three storeys high, with a stepped-back design on the left and right sides. The left portion has three first-floor windows, while the remaining section has two and then three first-floor windows. A first-floor sill band is present on the left portion. Original 6/6 sash windows are found on the first floor, and 3/6 sashes on the second floor, all set in plain reveals with sills. Decorative blocking courses and copings complete the exterior.
The left house has a central entrance with a six-panel door, the lower panels being raised and fielded and the upper panels flush. An overlight features decorative glazing bars, positioned within a porch with paired pilasters and an entablature. There's a 6/6 sash window to the right of the door, with a more modern window to its right. The central house displays a wood-mullioned shop window and a contemporary door; another entrance is present to the right, featuring a three-panel door within round-arched reveals, topped with a blind fanlight. The right house has a plate glass window and glazed door, alongside a modern garage door.
The left return side has two first-floor windows. The right bay is blank, with a ground-floor blind opening in a taller, wider round-arched recess. The remaining windows are 6/6 and 3/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills. First and second-floor bands are also present.
The right return side features two first-floor windows, a blind right bay, and a ground-floor blind opening in a taller, wider round-arched recess. Otherwise, the windows are 6/6 and 3/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills.
The interiors remain uninspected. Two of the houses at the right feature tent-roofed canopies supported on scrolled brackets. Suffolk Road was originally named Commercial Street, as depicted in Merrett's 1834 map. This group of houses represents a largely unaltered example related to similar buildings in the area.
