Description
16 and 17 Montpellier Villas are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1824 to 1828, likely designed by John Forbes. The villas are constructed from stucco over brick and feature a concealed roof with stuccoed party-wall stacks. They stand two storeys high and have four first-floor windows, with recessed outer entrance bays. Architectural details include a first-floor sill band, a crowning frieze and cornice, and a low, coped parapet that steps up to the center. The original windows are 6/6 sashes set in plain reveals, with the ground floor windows being taller and placed in wider segmental-arched recesses. The entrance features 6-panel doors with overlights. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the street was originally known as Montpellier Retreat, and John Forbes served as the architect and surveyor for the Pittville Estate around 1824 to 1825.
