Description

A pair of terraced houses dating to approximately 1824-1828, possibly designed by John Forbes. The houses are stucco over brick, with concealed roof, brick end stacks, and an iron balcony and porch. They have two storeys and three windows to the first floor. The windows are 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals with sills. The front doors have been renewed, with a 6-panel door to the left and a 3-panel door to the right, both with overlights. There is a decorative cornice and blocking course with copings. The first-floor balcony on the left has a central panel with a scrolled quatrefoil motif between oval panels and an X-motif on the returns. The shared porch has scrolls to the uprights and frieze and a tent roof. Originally known as Montpellier Retreat, the houses were likely designed by Forbes, who became architect and surveyor to the Pittville Estate around 1835-1836. The interior has not been inspected.
