Description

No. 21 Montpellier Villas, which includes No. 9 Suffolk Road, is a building that dates from around 1824 to 1828. It is possibly designed by architect John Forbes. The structure is made of stucco over brick and has a slate roof.

The building is two storeys tall and features three first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes a first-floor band, a crowning moulded string, a frieze, and a cornice with a blocking course and copings. The windows are 8/8 sashes set in plain reveals with sills, except for the ground floor on the left, which has a shop front with a three-light wooden mullion-and-transom window framed by pilasters, a frieze, end brackets, and a cornice. The central entrance consists of a part-glazed four-panel door in plain reveals.

On the left return, there is a single bay. The ground floor features a wide shop front with a similar surround, and to the right, there is a set-back four-panel door with an overlight. The first floor has a tripartite window with 1/1 sashes in plain reveals, topped with a cornice on acanthus corbels. The crowning mouldings continue from the main facade.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the street was originally known as Montpellier Retreat, and John Forbes served as the architect and surveyor for the Pittville Estate around 1835 to 1836.
