Includes: No.9 SUFFOLK ROAD. 2 houses, now house and shop. c1824-8. Architect possibly John Forbes. Stucco over brick with slate roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Stucco detailing includes first-floor band; crowning moulded string, frieze and cornice with blocking course and copings. 8/8 sashes in plain reveals and with sills, except to ground floor at left a shop front with 3-light wooden mullion-and-transom window in pilastered surround with frieze and end brackets and cornice. Central entrance a part-glazed 4-panel door in plain reveals. Left return: single bay. Ground floor has wide shop front with similar surround and encompassing at right, set back, a 4-panel door with overlight. First floor has tripartite window with 1/1 sashes in plain reveals and with cornice on acanthus corbels. Crowning mouldings continue from main facade. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: the street was originally known as Montpellier Retreat. Forbes was architect and surveyor to the Pittville Estate c1835-6.
