SO9421SE MONTPELLIER VILLAS 630-1/23/571 (East side) Nos.17A, 18 AND 19 with attached area railings

GV II

Terrace of 3 villas and attached railings. c1824-8 with later alterations. Probably by John Forbes. Stucco over brick with mansard slate roof at left and centre, otherwise concealed and stuccoed party-wall stacks; iron railings. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 6 first-floor windows. The first and 4th and 5th window-bays break forwards. Stucco detailings include first-floor sill band; crowning frieze and cornice with low, coped parapet. 6/6 and 1/1 horned sashes where original, all in plain reveals; those to ground floor are taller and the 5th is in wider and taller segmental-arched recesses. Entrances to first and fourth bays and at right: 6-panel doors with overlights. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: arrowhead area railings. HISTORICAL NOTE: the street was known originally as Montpellier Retreat. John Forbes was architect and surveyor to the Pittville Estate c1824-5.
