Description
A terrace of nine shops with residential flats above, dating to approximately 1820-1834. The building may incorporate earlier elements on the left side and later additions to the right. It is constructed of stucco over brick, with a renewed tile roof on the left and mock slate roofing elsewhere, concealed behind the parapet. The terrace is two or three storeys high, with attic dormers on numbers 27 and 34; it has thirteen first-floor windows, arranged as 1:1:1:1:1:1:2:1:4:1, with the rightmost window curving at an angle. Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor of number 34. First-floor windows are mostly original 2/2 sashes, with five canted bays featuring 6/6 sashes between 4/4 sashes. Windows are set in plain reveals with sills, except for those at number 27, which are within tooled architraves with lower scrolls. Number 27 has a crowning dentil frieze and cornice with end corbels and raised copings, while numbers 28-30, 32, and 34 have a continuous blocking course and copings. The shop fronts project, except for the rightmost one, and are similar in design, featuring iron cable-moulded mullions, canted inwards towards central glazed entrances with overlights. Number 34 has a glazed shop window with a pilastered surround, frieze, and cornice; the main shop window extends around the curved end, featuring end pilasters with slender cylindrical mullions, and a part-glazed door at the angled entrance. A three-window return front faces Suffolk Road. The interior of the building has not been inspected. Number 34 includes a tiled entrance with a gate. The building is noted as having fine shop fronts by the Civic Society’s Shop Front Survey, and is shown on Merrett's 1834 Map and possibly the Post Office Map of 1820.
