Description

Number 20 and 22 are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1832, located on Park Place in Cheltenham. They are constructed of stucco over brick with a hipped slate roof, featuring a central stucco stack and cast- and wrought-iron railings, porches, and window guards. The main structure has recessed entrance bays on the sides and full-height service ranges at the rear.

The villas are two storeys tall with attics and have six first-floor windows arranged in a 1:4:1 pattern. The stucco detailing includes pilasters that run through the ground and first floors at the ends and center, which interrupt the first-floor band. There is a crowning cornice, frieze, and cornice raised over the pilasters. The windows, mainly 6/6 sashes where original, are taller on the ground floor, with 3/3 sashes in the basement. The end entrances have a flight of five roll-edged steps leading to five-panel doors, which feature raised and fielded upper panels and a lower panel with a lozenge and fluted surround, along with fanlights—one door has radial glazing bars. The attic roof dormers contain 1/1 sashes. The main range has wide eaves.

At the rear, the villas retain a mix of 6/6, 8/8, and 6/6 sashes with margin lights; the rear of No. 22 features French windows with margin lights and decorative glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected. Notable subsidiary features include window guards on the ground floor with a scrolled lozenge motif, as well as similar motifs on the sides of the steps to No. 22. No. 20 has an oval and quatrefoil frieze on its porch. The railings beside the steps also display a scrolled lozenge motif. Park Place was developed by 1832 and forms a group with Nos 24-40.
