Description

Numbers 36 and 38 are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1820 to 1832, located in Cheltenham on Park Place. The buildings are constructed of stucco over brick and feature a hipped slate roof, with a central stucco chimney stack and an additional stack at the rear on the left side. There is an iron porch at the front. The villas have a double depth plan with side hallways and full-height service ranges at the back.

The exterior consists of two storeys above a basement, with two-storey entrance bays that are set back on the sides. There are six first-floor windows arranged in a pattern of 1:4:1. Stucco detailing includes a first-floor band that is interrupted by a central pilaster with a sunk panel. The windows are 6/6 sashes, with the ground floor windows being taller, all set in plain reveals with sills. The right side has Venetian blinds and blind boxes. The basement features 3/6 sashes. There are four steps leading to the entrance doors, which are five-panel doors; the left door is part-glazed and has a fanlight with radial glazing bars. The left entrance is within the porch, which has pilasters and a dentil frieze. The eaves are wide, and the rear of the villas has 6/6 sashes.

The interior has not been inspected. The porch on the right side features a scroll motif on the uprights, an openwork frieze, and an X-motif balustrade on the side of the steps. Park Place was developed by 1832 and forms a group with Nos. 20-34 (even) and No. 40 Park Place, as well as No. 8 Ashford Road.
