Description
Number 27 and the attached railings are a pair of semi-detached villas, now used as a house and flats, dating from circa 1832. They are located on Park Place in Cheltenham and include the property at number 6 Ashford Road. The construction is stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof and tall brick stacks serving as a party wall. The buildings are arranged in an L-shape, with slightly recessed entrance bays at each end.
The exterior is two storeys high with a basement, and features four first-floor windows. Stucco detailing includes a plinth, end and centre pilasters with sunk panels on both floors, and a first-floor band. The windows are all 6/6 sashes, taller to the ground floor, set in plain reveals with sills. The basement windows are 3/3 and 6/6 sashes. The right-hand entrance to Number 27 has a flight of five roll-edged steps leading to a slightly projecting porch with pilasters featuring incised decoration, a round arch with a keystone, and a five-panel door. The lower panel of the door is glazed and features a lozenge motif within a fluted surround. There is a fluted frieze above the door and a fanlight with batwing-and-circle pattern glazing bars. Wide eaves are present. The rear of the property also features 6/6 sashes, with the window to the staircase having radial glazing to the head. The left return, facing Ashford Road, has a two-window and four-window configuration on the first floor; a section of the building projects forward. It shares similar pilaster detailing and a tooled first-floor band. The windows are 2/2 horizontal-pane and 1/1 round-arched sashes with swept hoodmoulds. A central entrance has a flight of steps leading to a six-panel door with sidelights and an overlight, all within a pillared surround.
The interior of the property has not been inspected. The basement has window guards with embellished sticks. To the sides of the steps to Number 27, there is an X-motif balustrade. Park Place was developed by 1832.
