Description

Numbers 47 to 57 form a terrace of six houses, built around 1820 to 1850. The houses are of stucco construction over brick, with slate roofs, and have brick and stucco party-wall stacks. Ashlar walls are present, stuccoed on the left side, along with attached iron railings and window boxes.

The design is symmetrical, with projecting bays at the second, sixth, and seventh windows, and a pedimented central section. The houses are double-depth, featuring side halls and service ranges to the rear. They are two storeys high with basements, and have attics to the rear, displaying twelve first-floor windows (two per house). The entablature has a pediment to the central breakforward. Ionic pilasters are located at the ends of the projecting bays, and a pair are present at the centre. Stucco detailing includes rustication to the ground floor, drawn into voussoirs above the windows. The original windows are mostly 6/6 sashes; those on the ground floor have cambered heads, while the centre four and left two first-floor windows are taller. Various window boxes are present, notably ornate ones at numbers 51 and 57. The basement windows are original 5/10 and 10/10 sashes.

Recessed four-panel doors, part-glazed and with sidelights, lead to three entrances on the left and three on the right; number 51 has a pair of four-panel double doors with an overlight. The rear of the buildings retain several original 6/6 and 8/8 sashes; a first-floor canted bay at number 57 has a 6/6 sash between two 2/2 sashes. The interior has not been inspected.

The attached area railings are decorated with arrowhead designs and spearhead finials on the stanchions. The end walls are ramped downwards, terminating in octagonal piers with plinths and a peaked cap (missing from the left pier).
