Description
No. 17 is a cottage located on Park Road in Hatherleigh. It dates from the 17th century but has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottage features plastered cob walls and a gable-ended roof, which is mostly thatched, though the right-hand side is covered with asbestos slate. There is a brick stack at the left gable end. The original layout was likely a two-room plan with the left-hand room heated, but it was subdivided into two cottages in the 19th century and later reverted to a single house in the late 20th century.
The exterior is two stories high with an asymmetrical front that has three windows. Most of the windows are 19th-century small-paned two-light casements, except for the right-hand window on the first floor, which dates from the mid to late 20th century. There is a contemporary bay window below this. At the center of the front, there are twin gabled part-glazed porches from the 19th or early 20th century, although the doorway of the left-hand porch has been blocked. The interior was inaccessible during the survey.
