Description

Nos. 3 and 5 in Jacobstowe is a Grade II listed house that was originally three cottages. It dates from the 17th century, with later additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features rendered cob walls and has a gable-ended thatch roof, with a slate roof on the addition. There are brick stacks, including one axial stack and one at each gable end. The original layout was a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with the lower end to the left. The hall stack is positioned against the passage, and there are stairs in a projection at the rear of the hall. A 19th-century addition is located at the end of the inner room, and a single-storey 20th-century addition is at the rear of the left-hand end.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical six-window front, featuring a right-hand window in the lower slate-roofed addition. The windows are 20th-century small-paned two-light casements. There is a 20th-century plank door towards the left-hand side and a gabled 20th-century porch with a plank door towards the right-hand end. At the rear, there is a rectangular stair projection to the left of centre, which includes an original chamfered wooden framed light, along with an outshut to its right. Inside, there is a fireplace with a moulded wooden lintel resting on corbels and ashlar jambs, as well as chamfered cross beams.
