Description

Stile Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that has been significantly remodeled and extended in the late 19th century. It is possible that these alterations were made by George Devey, who also designed the nearby Broomford Manor. The building features mostly rendered rubble walls, with some exposed stonework that likely indicates the later additions. It has a gable-ended slate roof and two brick stacks, one axial and one at the rear gable end, with the axial stack made of granite ashlar.

The original layout of the farmhouse is not entirely clear, but it probably had a one-shaped plan. The original front two-room range now forms the rear cross-wing, with a one-room wing behind its right end that has become the current front. This wing was extended in the late 19th century, adding a porch and a rear wing parallel to the earlier two-room range.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front, featuring a two-storey gabled porch to the left of center. The windows are all from the late 19th century, consisting of three and four-light ovolo-moulded wooden mullion windows, except for the right-hand end, which has simpler casement windows. The left-hand ground floor window is a five-light canted bay. The porch includes a round-headed doorway with a late 19th-century four-panelled inner door, and there are contemporary low wrought iron railings in front of the house.

Inside, the rear wing has 17th-century chamfered ceiling beams with hollow step stops. This distinctive farmhouse is situated in a prominent position and is noted for its high-quality late 19th-century remodeling, which may be attributed to a major Victorian architect, as it is part of the Broomford Manor estate.
