Description
Nos. 13 to 18 on Dolvin Road are a row of six cottages built between 1845 and 1847, designed by the architect-surveyor Theophilus Jones for the Duke of Bedford estate. The cottages are constructed of brick and feature a gabled Welsh slate roof with large brick chimneys. Each cottage was originally designed with one room at the front and a shared rear service wing that encloses one side of the rear yard. They are one storey high with an attic, each having one window at the front. The facades of Nos. 13 and 18 are distinguished by gabled projections.
The cottages have chamfered segmental brick arches over 2-light wooden casements with glazing bars in square panes, although some windows have later replacements. The central four cottages feature gabled half dormers that break the dentilled eaves, while the gable ends of the outer projecting wings have label moulds over 2- above 3-light casements. No. 13 has been rendered, resulting in a loss of original detail. The entrances to Nos. 13 and 18 are located on the return elevations. Some of the original plank doors with cover strips are set beneath simple timber canopies supported by brick corbels.
Originally, the cottages had exposed timber joists in the ground-floor ceilings, interior shutters on the windows, quarry tile floors, and winder stairs. The interior was not inspected. Together with Nos. 7-12 and 19-24, these cottages form part of a notably complete and significant planned group of mid-19th century model cottages, which also includes St Rumons School.
