Description
A row of six cottages at 7-12 Dolvin Road, Tavistock, were built between 1845 and 1847. They were designed by the architect-surveyor Theophilus Jones for the Duke of Bedford estate. The cottages are constructed of brick with gabled slate roofs and large brick stacks with quadruple-grouped flues. Originally, each cottage had one room to the front and a shared rear service wing which enclosed one side of the rear yard. They are one storey with an attic, each having one window to the front, with the facade terminated by gabled projections to Nos. 7 and 12. There are chamfered segmental brick arches over 2-light wood casements with glazing bars to square panes, with some later replacements, set in gabled half-dormers to the central four cottages, which break the dentilled eaves. Label moulds are above the 3-light casements in the gable ends of the outer projecting wings. Some original plank doors with cover strips remain, all set under simple timber canopies supported on brick corbels. Entries to Nos. 7 and 12 are in the return elevations. Originally, the rear windows were horizontal sliding sashes; they have since been replaced. The interiors were not inspected but originally featured exposed floor joists to ground-floor ceilings, internal shutters to windows, quarry tile floors, and winder stairs. With Nos. 13 to 18, and 19 to 24, these cottages form a significant planned group of mid-19th-century model cottages, alongside St Rumons Primary School.
