Description

Abbey Gatehouse is a late 12th century structure with 15th century additions, restored in 1824. It has two storeys and features two pointed arched windows with hood mouldings, showcasing the fine 12th century arches. The upper room, now the Tavistock Library, was originally accessed by an external staircase on the north side. John Foulston altered and thoroughly restored the Gatehouse when it was converted into the Tavistock Library, which was founded in 1799, in 1829. The building is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
