Description
The Former Butchers' Market Hall in Tavistock was built around 1860 for the 7th Duke of Bedford. It is constructed from Hurdwick stone rubble, featuring granite and yellow brick dressings, and has slate roofs with stone-coped gables at the southeast end and a hipped roof at the northwest end. The building has a plan consisting of two parallel ranges aligned on a northwest-southeast axis, which are cranked to the east-southeast at the southeast end.
The exterior is a single storey with the southeast end facing Market Road, showcasing two bays with twin gables. It features tall vehicular entrances on the ground floor, which have yellow brick depressed two-centred arches and plank glazed doors. Above these entrances, there are similarly arched windows in the gables. The northwest elevation, which faces the Pannier Market, includes two smaller depressed two-centred arch entrances that have been infilled with shop fronts. Louvred ventilators run along the ridge of the roofs.
Inside, the space is open to braced tie-rod roofs. This building was part of a development that included the Pannier Market, Town Hall, shops on Duke Street, and the Police Station.
