Description
The former police cottages, located immediately east of the police station in Tavistock, were built in 1869 by the Bedford Estate. These attached houses are constructed from stone rubble with granite dressings and feature slate roofs with gabled ends. The building has stone axial and gable-end stacks with set-offs and moulded caps.
The cottages are L-shaped in plan, with a cross-wing on the right side extending to the rear, and are designed in the Tudor style. The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical three-window southeast front. There is a slightly advanced gabled bay on the right, along with small gables over the central and left bays. The windows are framed in chamfered granite and have casements with glazing bars. The right-hand gable displays a tablet inscribed with the year 1869, along with the letter B and a coronet above it. The rear of the building faces the police station, and the left wing is rendered on the first floor.
The cottages were built by the 7th Duke of Bedford to serve the adjacent police station. The interior has not been inspected.
