Description
St Rumons Primary School is a school built between 1845 and 1847 for the Duke of Bedford estate. It is constructed from coursed and squared local stone and features a gabled slate roof. The building is designed with classroom wings on either side of a central assembly hall and is a single storey high. The front has five windows, with the outer wings projecting and featuring gables that face the street. The doorway in the central bay is highlighted with limestone dressings. There are relieving arches above the mullioned three-light windows flanking the doorway, as well as mullioned and transomed three-light windows on the inner returns and front gables of the outer wings. The outer wings also have kneelers to stone copings and single-light louvred windows at the apexes, along with three-light dormers at the center. The side elevations have been altered, but the rear has similar window designs. The interior retains its original timber open roofs. The school is included for its historical and group value, especially for how its facade contributes to an important planned urban group of model cottages.
