Description
Steppingley County Primary School is a school building dating from around 1870, designed by Henry Clutton, likely for the Duke of Bedford. It is constructed of coursed ironstone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building is a large rectangular block with a gabled roof and single-storey entrance blocks at both gable ends, exhibiting a loosely Tudor style. The front elevation is asymmetrical and includes two projecting chimney stacks, where the lower parts are combined with buttresses and the upper parts are octagonal.
The left-hand stack is flanked by two single-light windows with transoms, while the right-hand stack is flanked by paired two-light mullion and transom windows. All windows are square-headed, featuring lights with cambered arches, and are adorned with square labels that have geometrical moulded stops. The building has an embattled parapet and stone-coped gables with moulded finials. The two entrance blocks have cambered-headed doorways with plank doors on strap hinges. A moulded band at the sill level of the main block continues around the entrance blocks, turning upwards around the doorways to form labels.
