Description
Steppingley Schoolhouse is a school building dating from around 1870, designed by Henry Clutton, likely for the Duke of Bedford. It is located adjacent to Steppingley County Primary School. The ground floor is constructed of coursed ironstone with ashlar dressings, while the first floor features colourwashed plaster with applied timber frame decoration. The building has slate roofs and is loosely in the Tudor style.
It is a two-storey T-plan structure with a single-storey outbuilding extending from the northeast, creating an overall L-plan. The main west block has a jettied first floor. The ground floor windows, which reflect those of the school, are mullioned and square-headed, consisting of two and three lights, with each light featuring a cambered arch. The first floor windows are casements with glazing bars. The west elevation includes a jettied gabled dormer. The doorway is situated at the southeast angle, beneath an open porch with a hipped slate roof. There are integral chimney stacks, one on the north gable and another at the southeast angle, both with rounded angles.
