Description
Hinton House, formerly known as The Vicarage, is a house that was originally a rectory. It dates from the early to mid-18th century, with extensions added to the rear in the late 18th century and to the front in 1857, as documented in plans from the Bedfordshire Record Office. The original sections are constructed of red brick, while the 19th-century addition features a mix of red and yellow chequered brick. The building has hipped clay tiled roofs. The original structure runs parallel to the road, is one room deep, and consists of two storeys and attics. The complete building forms a rough L-plan. The original part includes projecting corner piers with cyma recta capitals, brick bands at the first floor and cornice level, and a plain stone-coped parapet. The windows are flush sashes without glazing bars, all featuring gauged brick flat arches, with the first-floor windows on the side elevations having scalloped edges. The box dormers in the attic have casements with glazing bars. The later additions cover half of the front elevation and most of the rear, primarily containing sash windows. Inside, the original block has contemporary panelling in the left-hand ground floor room and a central staircase with barleytwist balusters.
