Description

The Church of St Lawrence is a parish church dating from 1858-60. It was designed by Henry Clutton for the Duke of Bedford to replace a medieval church that had collapsed. The church is constructed of coursed ironstone with Bath stone dressings, and has slate roofs. It comprises a chancel, a north vestry, a nave, a south porch, a north aisle, and a west tower. The design is a generalized, developed Gothic style.

The chancel has a three-light pointed-arched east window with geometrical tracery, and single and two-light windows in a similar style on the south elevation. The north vestry and organ chamber are built in the form of a transept, with a smaller lean-to block. The north gable features a rose window with geometrical tracery, and archways provide access to the north aisle and chancel. The nave has a four-bay north arcade surmounted by four clerestory windows, all of two-lights under cambered heads with exaggerated cusping. The south elevation mirrors the north, with two single-light windows topped by four matching clerestory windows. Plain parapets run along the nave. The south porch is gabled, with a pointed archway and small quatrefoils on the west and east sides. The north aisle is low, with four quatrefoils and a plain parapet. The west tower is three-stage, with an embattled parapet. A stair turret within the southwest angle rises above the parapet and has an octagonal top. The bell stage has pointed-arched two-light windows with pronounced cusping; the middle stage has small single lights. The ground stage has a pointed-arched two-light window.

The interior is relatively plain. The chancel incorporates a reset 15th-century piscina from the old church.
