Description

A row of six cottages located at 19-24 Dolvin Road, Tavistock, was built between 1845 and 1847. They were designed by the architect-surveyor Theophilus Jones for the Duke of Bedford estate. The cottages are constructed of brick, with colourwashing and rendering, and have gabled slate roofs and large rendered brick stacks. Originally, each cottage had one room at the front and a shared rear service wing, enclosing one side of a rear yard. They are a single storey with an attic; each has one window facing the front, with the facade terminating in gabled projections at numbers 19 and 24. The windows are 2-light casements with glazing bars to square panes, with some later replacements, and are set within gabled half dormers on the central four cottages, which feature dentilled eaves. Label moulds are above the 2-light and 3-light casements in the gable ends of the projecting wings. Entries to numbers 19 and 24 are located on the return elevations. Contemporary 20th-century doors are set under simple timber canopies supported on brick corbels. The interior remains uninspected. The cottages are included in the listing for their group value as part of an unusually complete and significant planned group of mid-19th century model cottages.
