Description

This is a house with a shop, built in the early or mid-19th century, and later altered with a shop front in the late 19th or early 20th century. It is located on Grenville Street, Bideford.

The building has a solid rendered front wall and a slate roof with a stone rubble chimney on the right side. It is three storeys high and has a two-window front. The ground floor is arranged in two bays, flanked and separated by broad pilasters, the lower halves of which are fluted. Each pilaster is topped with a large fluted console, finished with a panelled, round-headed block. An entablature with a moulded cornice runs between the consoles and blocks. The right-hand bay contains a pair of display windows with patterned iron grilles at the top, and a recessed, half-glazed door with two solid moulded panels below. A patterned floor of coloured tiles is in front of the shop door, and there is a panelled wooden ceiling above. The left-hand bay has a round-arched doorcase, likely from the early or mid-19th century, with panelled reveals and a matching six-panelled door with a metal knocker featuring a fist clenching a bar with a wreath hanging from it. The upper-storey windows have moulded architraves and plain sashes. A moulded wooden board runs below the eaves.

The interior was only partially inspected. The entrance passage has floor tiles matching those in the shop entrance. The walls have a dado with a moulded rail and skirting. The staircase, which is no earlier than the 19th century, has boarded balustrades.
