Description

No 77 is a house located in Clovelly, dating from the early 18th century, with probable alterations made in the 19th century. It was repaired in 1918 by Christine Hamlyn. The exterior is rendered and whitewashed, featuring emphasized plastered quoins, hipped and gabled side roofs, and brick stacks on either side of the front, with the left stack being very tall. The building has a rectangular main range with a central hall and flanking rooms.

The main front faces the street and has a symmetrical arrangement of windows: on the first floor, there are 12-pane, 2-light casements set in gabled half-dormers with fretwork bargeboards. The ground floor features a large canted bay to the left with four multi-paned casements and a flat lead roof, while to the right is a 20th-century sash window that is flush-mounted, exposing the sash boxes. The central door opening contains an 18th-century, six-panelled door with a thick frame and a two-pane transom light. The ground floor drops away to the left, creating a basement, which has a door opening and three 2-light casements with glazing bars, along with a pair of French windows leading to a 20th-century concrete balcony supported by three rough rubble columns.

The forecourt is enclosed by a rubble wall that features a central ornamental gate. Inside, there is an early 18th-century plaster ceiling with strapwork ornamentation located to the left of the ground floor. The roof was re-roofed in 1918.
