Description
Nos. 80 and 81 High Street are a pair of houses with a shop, built in the late 19th century. They feature a solid rendered front with wooden bay windows and a slate mansard roof. A large red-brick chimney is located at the center of the ridge, with the upper courses projecting to form an entablature. The buildings are designed in a classical style and stand three storeys tall with a garret, displaying a four-window range.
The ground storey has two later shop fronts; the one on the left is from the late 20th century, while the one on the right is from the early 20th century and includes coloured leaded glass at the tops of the display windows. The upper storeys feature a pair of bay windows with curved sides in the center, each storey finished with an entablature that has a panelled frieze, and linked by further panels between the storeys. The windows are sashes with horns; the middle ones have patterned margin-panes, while those in the upper storeys form round arches. The outer windows are narrow and round-arched, adorned with moulded archivolts and keyblocks. Moulded stringcourses link the sills and imposts to the bays, with the panelling and top entablatures of the bays continuing across the fronts.
There are four dormer windows; the middle two are round-arched with imposts, moulded archivolts, and keyblocks, while the outer two are plain with pent roofs. The rear wall, which is visible from New Street, has sash windows with a single upright glazing-bar in each sash. These houses are an important part of the townscape, especially when viewed from The Quay along the High Street, and are included for their group value.
