Description
31 Coombe Vale Road is an early 19th-century house that is positioned at a right angle to the road and is attached to No. 29. The building features painted stucco and a slate roof with a stack on the right side. It has a two-unit plan and includes a 20th-century extension on the right. The house is designed in a picturesque style.
The exterior consists of two storeys with an attic and has a symmetrical two-window arrangement. The gabled garden front, which faces northwest, showcases a fretted bargeboard and two-light margin-paned casement windows, each with horizontal diamond-shaped panes in the overlights—one in the attic and two on the lower floors. The first-floor windows have louvred shutters, likely from the 20th century. A prostyle porch supported by timber Tuscan columns features a moulded cornice and pediment above a door with six raised-and-fielded panels and a narrow overlight.
Inside, there is an open-well open-string staircase with a high swan's neck handrail leading up to the attic. The interior also includes six-panel doors and a fireplace with a reeded surround and roundels at the upper corner blocks, which has a later 19th-century cast-iron arch-plate register grate.
Additionally, there is a wall attached to the northeast corner of the house that fronts the street and extends to the right, where plain gate piers flank a pedestrian gateway. This property is a substantially complete example of a 19th-century cottage ornee, resembling others found in the Teignmouth area.
