Description
No 28 is an attached house dating from the early 19th century, featuring whitewashed stucco and an imitation slate close-eaved roof. The ridge and eaves are higher than those of No 27, while the ridge is slightly lower than No 29. It has red brick end stacks and stands three storeys tall with a cellar. The front has a three-window range, all early 20th century horned sashes with 10-pane upper halves. The ground floor windows are larger and have eared surrounds, while the centre has a square-headed doorway topped with a 20th-century flat hood on brackets. A trellis porch that was noted in 1981 has since been removed. There are barred cellar openings in the ground to the left and in the wall to the right.
Access to the house is via three stone steps leading up to a six-panel door, with the top four panels fielded and featuring panelled reveals. Some panels are also fielded, and there is an overlight, although the radiating tracery and stained glass recorded in 1981 are no longer present. An inscribed stone at the top right is dated 1830 or 1839. The rear of the house has an outshut with another outshut to the left and a three-storey gable to the right with deep eaves. A long stair-light is located at the centre, but it was boarded over at the time of the resurvey.
The front yard is enclosed by a dwarf wall made of grey limestone, complemented by wrought iron railings featuring dog bars, scroll panels above, a double top-rail, and scroll finials. The standards have urn finials, but the gate is missing.
Inside, there is an open string staircase with stick balusters, scrolled treads, and a slender handrail that is scrolled at the foot, without newels. The house features six-panelled doors, although some are boarded on the upper floors. There are arched sideboard recesses, a moulded ceiling cornice with some leaf scroll detailing, and a wide elliptical hall arch with a panelled soffit supported by reeded pilasters.
