Description

No 27 is an end-terrace house dating from the 19th century, featuring whitewashed stucco and a close-eaved slate roof with a hip to the right. The building is two storeys high with a cellar and has an L-shaped plan. The front has a three-window range, with 12-pane sash windows on the upper floor. The ground floor originally had a later 19th-century tripartite hornless sash window on either side of a central square-headed doorway, which was under restoration at the time of the resurvey to return to its original style. There are cellar openings beneath the windows.

The doorway was undergoing alterations during the resurvey. The former mid-19th-century doorcase had panelled pilasters and a dentil cornice supported by consoles. The door, which was missing, previously featured an overlight with intersecting ogee tracery. In 1981, there was a four-panel door with shaped upper panels and an Egyptian head knocker. The entrance is accessed by four steps and has a raised plinth over the cellar windows.

The side elevation facing Picton Place has a two-window rear range with 12-pane sashes and a small window on the ground floor right, which replaced a door. The lower rear wing includes three small square four-pane casements under the eaves and two small 12-pane sashes on the ground floor, with the centre one replacing a door.

The front yard was enclosed by railings in 1981, which were missing at the time of the resurvey. Previously, there was a wall made of coursed rubble and iron railings with spiked finials, standards with urn finials, and a gate with a top rail that curved down to the centre and included dog bars.

A stone rubble wall bounds the rear court, extending approximately 20 meters along Picton Place and returning along the northern side. Inside, there is a stair on the rear wall at right angles, featuring stick balusters, open treads with scrolled ends, and a thin rail. The cellar has most of its detail removed due to renewal works in 2002, but there is a wide elliptical arch in the hall.
