Description

No. 22 is an end-terrace house, independently built and positioned well forward of No. 23. It features two parallel ranges, with the rear range being lower, and has slate gabled roofs along with a brick stack to the left of the front range and boxed eaves. The front elevation is made of unpainted stucco, and the house is two stories high with a cellar, presenting a three-window range. The upper floor has 4-pane sash windows, while the ground floor boasts a canted 2-4-2 bay window with pilasters and a modillion eaves cornice supported by large brackets, flanking a central doorway. Access to the doorway is via a flight of five slate steps, which are framed by a stuccoed surround with a plain cornice on consoles, leading to a 20th-century glazed door with a plain overlight. Beneath the right bay window is a cellar window.

The rear range features a first floor of painted brick with three horned 12-pane sash windows and a close-eaved roof, while the ground floor is obscured by an added garage. The front garden is enclosed by a yellow brick dwarf wall topped with later 19th-century railings that have alternately straight and twisted uprights, interspersed with panels of iron scrollwork. The gate has a similar central panel and is flanked by cast-iron gate posts with spearhead finials. Previous listings noted that the right end stack is now missing.

Inside, the house retains its original staircase with stick balusters, panelled doors, and a dado rail. There are shallow arched niches in the sitting room, and a half-glazed door with coloured glass leads to the cellar. The rear hall features 19th-century lozenge pattern floor tiles.
