Description
The Orangery at Bitton House is an early 19th-century structure located on Bitton Park Road in Teignmouth. It features a painted stone plinth, stucco, and wood, topped with a hipped glazed roof. The building has a rectangular plan with canted bays on the sides and a curved bay at the rear.
On the exterior, it is a single-storey building with a symmetrical arrangement of nine windows. The windows are grouped in threes, framed by octagonal painted wood pilasters and topped with a cornice that encircles the building. The front and side elevations showcase semicircular-arched 6/6-pane sash windows, which include painted wood spandrels and radial glazing bars at the top. Panelled pilasters support continuous moulded archivolts above the windows. The central section of the facade is slightly stepped forward and features double doors beneath the central window.
Inside, the orangery boasts a full-height hemi-spherical recess in the curved rear bay, contributing to its distinguished and striking design, as noted by Pevsner.
