Description

A row of four houses with shops, dating from the early 19th century, with possible origins in an earlier period. The building is constructed of painted stucco, with slate gambrel roofs, rendered stacks to the gable ends and party walls, and three 20th-century raking dormers. It has double-depth plans and a rear wing to the right.

The exterior is two storeys high, with one and two-window ranges (Nos. 42 and 40 have flying freeholds). No. 39 features a 6/6-pane sash window to the first floor right, above a recessed, mid-19th century four-panel door with overlight. The door and shop are flanked by slightly moulded pilasters, and a bowed shop window with two rows of four panes is to the left. No. 40 has two 19th-century casement windows above a similar shop window to the left, and a four-pane flat shop window to the right. Nos. 41 and 42, formerly two separate shops, are now a single, double-width shop, with late 19th-century 2-over-2-pane sash windows to the first floor. No. 41 has a four-panel, half-glazed door with overlight, flanked by fluted pilasters, and a curved bay with 20th-century glazing to the left. No. 42 features a 19th-century canted bay with plate-glass windows. Gabled consoles flank the fascia and one is positioned on the former party wall. The rear right wing has a steeply-pitched mansard roof.

The interiors were not inspected, but the ground floors are noted as having been altered. The building represents an interesting early 19th-century commercial development, characterised by curved bays to the shops.
