Description

Smugglers Cottage is a detached cottage located in the center of Ringmore village, likely dating from the 17th century. The building features colourwashed rendering and a thatched roof. It was probably originally two dwellings, and alterations and changes to the windows obscure its original layout, which is thought to have consisted of three rooms with a cross-passage behind a large central stack.

The cottage has one and a half storeys facing the road. On the ground floor, there are five two-light casements with glazing bars and one single light. The right end of the facade has a short section of wall that is brought forward, leading to a set-back unit with higher eaves. The first floor features two two-light casements with eyebrow arches at the left end. There is a large ridge stack slightly off-center to the left, and a small square stack below the ridge on the right side above a projecting bay. The hipped left end has a small two-light window above a large 20th-century casement.

At the back, there is a large central section of the roof that sweeps down over a 'rustic' porch. To the left of the porch, there are two two-light casements with eyebrow arches above a 20th-century door, alongside a two-light and a three-light casement. The porch includes a long shallow seven-light window and an entrance plank door within it, as well as a two-light window with an eyebrow arch above French doors and a two-light casement to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
