Description
Hill Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 18th century, located in the center of Ringmore village. The building features limewashed rubble and a cob upper level, topped with a thatched roof. It is likely a symmetrical block with both rooms heated, extended on the left by one bay, or possibly incorporating an outbuilding.
The cottage has two storeys and three windows, which mainly consist of 2-light glazing bar casements, with eyebrow windows at the upper level. On the left side of the ground floor, there is a larger 2-light sash casement with nine panes, and to the right of the door, there is a 3-light window. A 20th-century door is set beneath a thatched hood supported by wooden brackets, positioned between the second and third bays. The cottage has a cropped stack to the right and a larger stack to the left, which may have originally been external.
To the left, the thatch slopes down into a hip above what appears to be an outbuilding, possibly a donkey house. This outbuilding features plank doors on the return and a small rectangular opening, likely for a former hay loft. Beyond this, there is a former doorway now fitted with a 2-light casement with glazing bars. The wing at the back of the cottage is not of special interest.
The interior has undergone considerable modifications; there is a fireplace on the left, but none in the right room, and some evidence of a staircase by the fireplace. The roof has not been inspected. The cottage is situated across the slope of the road and extends back into the hillside.
