Description
Thatched Cottage is a house with an adjoining cottage, possibly originally built as a single house, dating from the 18th century or earlier. It features painted stone rubble and cob, mostly rendered on the front (south) side. The roofs are thatched with wheat-reed, and there is a brick chimney over the left gable end (west) as well as a half-round-on-plan external chimney breast on the right gable end.
The layout was originally possibly a three-room through passage plan but has been remodelled into a two-room house with a central passage and a single-cell cottage to the right (east). At the rear, there is a shallow but wide external projection under a thatched outshut that contains stairs. The overall shape is now L-shaped, with a 20th-century one-room, two-storey extension with a thatched roof added to the front of the cottage.
The building is two storeys high, with a nearly symmetrical south front featuring 20th-century 12-pane, two-light casements. The nearly central door is a 20th-century glazed door with a thatched hood, and there is a small single-light casement inserted above and to the right. The cottage has a 20th-century wing on the original front (south) side but retains a one-window rear with a doorway to the right of the windows. A stair turret to the right of the doorway has two small window openings with 20th-century casements. The interior has not been inspected.
