Description

Barnford is a detached house that was once a smithy, dating from the 17th or 18th century. It is constructed of limewashed rubble or cob and features a thatched roof. The building has an L-plan shape with a gable end facing the street and a cross passage near the lower end. There are two eaves stacks located at the back. The main entry is now situated in the internal angle, beneath a one-storey lean-to addition.

The house has two storeys, with the gable facing the street featuring a large projecting base for the stack. To the right of this gable, there is a part-glazed door with a slate pent hood, and a 2-light glazing-bar casement window above it on the first floor. The return face of the extension has a 2-light casement window and a plank door leading to a hood. The right return has a 2-light casement window with a transom, while the left return features a 2-light casement window in the gable above a blocked doorway, with a 20th-century door to the right. There are also 2-light over 3-light casements at the stack end.

At the back, there are two lateral stacks and a 12-pane sash window along with various casements. Notably, at the north end on the corner, there is an unexplained semicircular projection. Inside, the bathroom may contain remnants of a raised cruck, and there is a good 2-panel fielded door in the dressing room, as well as a moulded classical cornice in one of the bedrooms. The roof structure includes six A-frames.
